Emerging from the forests of Morbihan, the octagonal keep of Largouët rises to a height of 50 metres - one of the most imposing in Brittany. A bewitching medieval vestige that witnessed the passing of Henry Tudor before he became King of England.
In the heart of the Breton moors, a few kilometres from Elven, the towers of Largouët emerge from the vegetation like a stone dream torn from the Middle Ages. This exceptional site brings together two complementary and striking structures: a round tower with an elegant curve and an octagonal keep 50 metres high, one of the best-preserved and tallest medieval towers in Brittany. Largouët can't be visited - it can be felt. What fundamentally sets this monument apart from so many other Breton fortresses is precisely the sheer power of its keep. Irregularly octagonal in plan, massive and austere, it distributes five superimposed levels that invite you to make a gradual ascent towards the light. From the top, on a clear day, the view embraces a horizon of forests and ponds typical of the Morbihan region, offering a rare perspective on the deep Breton hinterland. A visit to the ruins of Largouët is like an archaeological walk. The remains of the two main buildings - to the north and south - as well as those of the châtelet allow you to mentally reconstitute the scale of a seigniorial fortress at its height. The coppice that has reclaimed its rightful place between the stones adds a romantic dimension to the site, so dear to the sensibilities of the 19th century. The natural setting also contributes to the experience: the castle is surrounded by ponds and dense woodland, giving it the atmosphere of an Arthurian legend. On certain summer evenings, sound and light shows plunge the public into the most dramatic hours of Brittany's history, transforming the ruins into a living theatre. Whether you're a medieval history buff, a heritage photography enthusiast or simply looking for an off-the-beaten-track getaway, Largouët delivers a rare and authentic experience, far removed from the crowds that saturate the most popular sites.
The fortified complex at Largouët comprises several elements in very different states of preservation. The keep, the centrepiece of the site, stands on an irregular octagonal plan - a rare form in medieval French military architecture - reaching a height of 50 metres and distributing five interior levels. This exceptional height, made possible by the considerable thickness of the granite walls, makes it one of the tallest towers in Brittany. Its massive, angular silhouette contrasts deliberately with the more graceful three-storey north-western round tower, whose facings benefited from restoration work in the early 20th century. The two main buildings - to the north and south - remain as evocative ruins, with fragmentary elevations that still reveal the original spatial layout: large reception rooms, outbuildings and internal entrances. The châtelet, a defensive element at the entrance to the complex, completes the ensemble. All the stonework is in local granite, a typical Morbihan stone that gives the ruins their grey and bluish hues, depending on the lighting. Stylistically, Largouët belongs to the tradition of Breton Gothic fortresses, with no concessions to decorative ornamentation. The architecture is entirely defensive: thick walls, small openings and machicolations. The octagonal shape of the keep, while military in function, nevertheless introduces a geometric subtlety that sets Largouët apart from the more common cylindrical or square towers.
