In the heart of the Pas-de-Calais coalfield, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the former Sainte-Barbe maternity hospital - also known as Les Marronniers - stands as an exceptional testimony to the social policy developed by the major mining companies at the beginning of the 20th century. The lines are sober, the openings generous to encourage sunlight and natural ventilation, in accordance with the prevailing hygienic precepts of the time. The volumetric composition reflects the complexity of the interior programme: the various departments (maternity, surgery, rehabilitation, laboratories, inhalatorium) were distributed in such a way as to ensure fluid circulation and rigorous separation of medical functions. The low-sloped roofs and cornices with their lightly modelled features give the building a serene horizontality. The tree-lined grounds, planted with century-old chestnut trees, provide a green backdrop that tempers the functional rigour of the buildings and softens their approach. The contemporary extension built in 2001 adopts a position of respectful discretion, favouring volumes and materials that do not seek to compete with the original architecture but to complement it harmoniously.
