Nestling in the maze of gilded streets of Sarlat-la-Canéda, the former chapel of the Récollets - also known as the chapel of the Penitents - is one of those discreet monuments that offer the curious an architectural surprise of the highest order. Far from the hustle and bustle of the main squares in Sarlat, it is a haven of stone and silence, an unspoilt testament to the devotion and artistic refinement of the 17th century in Périgord. What immediately sets the building apart is the sophistication of its entrance portal: two columns frame a door surmounted by an interrupted pediment, a typically Baroque gesture that breaks with the surrounding Gothic sobriety. This seemingly insignificant detail reveals a clear aesthetic ambition, that of a religious order anxious to assert its presence in a town already dense with remarkable monuments. Inside, the eye is immediately drawn to a monumental carved wooden altarpiece, a masterpiece of regional religious craftsmanship, whose scrolls, niches and gilded cherubs rival the finest examples of French Baroque sculpture. The adjoining cloister, in the style of Louis XIII, offers a very different atmosphere: its sober, regular arcades create a space for meditation and strolling, where the light of Périgord plays between the columns according to the time of day. The architectural complex comprises a chapel with a classical longitudinal plan and an adjoining cloister, forming a representative example of 17th-century French conventual architecture. The single nave, of sober proportions, is extended by a choir of equivalent length ending in a flat chevet - a common feature in the conventual chapels of the mendicant orders, which favoured liturgical functionality over monumentality. Two rectangular chapels open onto the south wall of the nave, providing spaces dedicated to brotherhoods or donor families. The exterior façade is dominated by a beautifully crafted Baroque portal: two engaged columns frame the door and support an entablature topped by an interrupted pediment, whose broken scrolls give way to a central decorative motif. This device, borrowed from the repertoire of late Roman architecture reinterpreted by the Italian Renaissance, introduces a visual dynamism that contrasts with the massive minerality of the Sarlat stone. The entire building is made of ochre limestone, typical of the Périgord Noir region, giving the chapel the warm colouring typical of Sarlat monuments. Inside, the sculpted wooden altarpiece is the centrepiece: arranged in superimposed registers and framed by twisted or fluted columns, it develops a Christian iconographic programme typical of the French Baroque, combining niches with statues, painted panels and richly treated plant motifs. The adjoining cloister, in the Louis XIII style, features semi-circular arches resting on pillars or columns with sober capitals, forming a covered ambulatory of great regularity.
