History
Nestling in the village of Saint-Ferme, in the heart of the Gironde Entre-Deux-Mers region, the former Benedictine abbey is one of the best-preserved monastic complexes in the South-West. Founded at the end of the 11th century, it has lived through nine hundred years of turbulent history, accumulating layers of architecture that is both pious and warlike, the coherence of which still amazes today's visitor. What makes this monument truly unique is the coexistence, under the same roof, of the most diverse functions: cloister, chapter house, dormitory, refectory, but also prison and court. The courtroom, with its remarkable hooded fireplace adorned with a medieval fresco, is a reminder that the abbot of Saint-Ferme exercised temporal authority over the village community here, far beyond his purely spiritual role. This dual role, as both sanctuary and fortress, gives the site a rare historical density. The tour takes place around a paved courtyard, a remnant of the site of the vanished cloister, bordered by three conventual wings with a strong fortified character. The west building, buttressed and pierced by loopholes, houses a spiral staircase housed in a turret that leads to the upper floors - a climb that offers unexpected views of the surrounding Gironde countryside. You can still sense the tense atmosphere of the Wars of Religion, when monks and villagers barricaded themselves behind these thick walls. The setting, however, is that of a peaceful Gascon village, of which the abbey is the founding monument. Just a stone's throw from the Entre-Deux-Mers vineyards, a visit to the abbey is a natural part of a wider excursion to discover the rural heritage of the Gironde. Architecture
The conventual complex at Saint-Ferme follows the traditional layout of Benedictine abbeys, around a central paved courtyard that occupied the site of the medieval cloister, which has now disappeared. Three remaining wings - east, south and west - enclose this space, giving it an enclosed character reminiscent of the rigour of the inner courtyards of fortified castles. The main entrance is via a corridor in the corner of the west facade of the church, itself in the late Romanesque style with the severe lines characteristic of the Southern Gothic style. The defensive dimension of the architecture is omnipresent and constitutes the major singularity of the building. The west building, the most representative of this spirit, is buttressed by powerful buttresses and pierced by loopholes that give it the appearance of a real watchtower. An internal staircase, protected by embrasures, leads up to the first floor, from where a spiral staircase housed in a turret provides access to the second floor. On the ground floor, two cross-vaulted rooms - the prison and the law courts - perfectly illustrate the duality of the abbey institution: a place of prayer and of seigniorial justice at the same time. The hooded fireplace on the parquet floor, decorated with a partially preserved fresco, is one of the most precious elements of the medieval interior decoration. A second fortified corridor, pierced through the thickness of the walls, provides an exit to the outside of the enclosure, eloquent testimony to the military imperatives that governed the reconstruction of the 13th-14th centuries.
