Nestling in the Bas Chablais region, at Perrignier in Haute-Savoie, the former abbey of Notre-Dame du Lieu - sometimes known as "Petit-Lieu" - is one of those discreet monuments that harbour a wealth of history in inverse proportion to its notoriety. Probably founded in the middle of the 12th century, this female Cistercian abbey has weathered the convulsions of Savoy's history with astonishing resilience, leaving behind vestiges of great architectural eloquence. What makes the site truly unique is the layering of its different eras: the medieval church, enhanced at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries under the influence of the great families of the Chablais region, stands side by side with fragments of the conventual building - dormitory, chapter house, guest house - which still reveal in stone the meticulous organisation of Cistercian monastic life. Few rural abbeys in this region have preserved such a clear vision of their original layout. A visit to the site offers a contemplative and slightly melancholy experience, typical of "inhabited ruins": walls that bear the scars of the Reformation, the passage of time and even the passing of a railway line in the 19th century. The church, whose roof structure was rebuilt at the expense of the original vault, nevertheless retains its tall, slender silhouette, a testament to the architectural ambitions of its Cistercian builders. The overall layout, as can still be reconstructed from the remains, follows the classic layout of Cistercian abbeys: an abbey church oriented east-west, a convent building built around a cloister, and outbuildings used to accommodate guests. The presence of a separate guest house, still partially preserved, bears witness to the importance attached to receiving the lay patrons and noble families who frequented the monastery. The church is the architectural highlight of the site. Raised at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, it is remarkably vertical for a rural abbey of this scale, revealing late Gothic influences typical of Savoy at the time. The roof structure, rebuilt in the 19th century to replace the original vaulting, alters the interior perception of the space, but the height of the gutter walls still bears witness to the original ambitions of the builders. The choir, which was partially destroyed during the Reformation and whose lower openings were filled in when the railway was built in 1880, nevertheless retains its evocative power. The remains of the conventual building - the nuns' dormitory and chapter house - illustrate Cistercian civil-religious architecture, with its semi-circular or slightly broken bays characteristic of Savoyard Gothic. The materials used, mainly carefully worked local limestone, anchor the monument in the geological landscape of the Chablais region.
