A former 18th-century presbytery in Saint-Front-de-Pradoux, a discreet jewel in the Périgord Blanc: its five arcades and gallery with wooden pillars reveal unexpectedly elegant rural architecture.
Nestling in the Périgord Blanc, in Saint-Front-de-Pradoux, the former presbytery is one of those rural buildings that defy expectations. Far from the splendour of the châteaux of the Dordogne or the austere convents of the Middle Ages, it embodies domestic and religious architecture of rare sophistication for its time and context, and has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1974. The first thing that strikes you is the east facade and its almost palatial layout: five wide arches running the length of the building, supporting a gallery with a ceiling of exposed beams that served the large rooms on the first floor. This regular layout, designed to articulate community life and a space for meditation, is reminiscent of certain conventual architecture in the south of France, but here it is expressed in a secularised and pragmatic spirit typical of 18th-century provincial architecture. The gallery, with its irregularly-patterned spalted wooden pillars and arched roof framework, bears witness to remarkable local craftsmanship. The rounded corners of the building, the strong moulded cornice at the start of the roof and the Mansard-style roof - a mixture of canal tiles on the terrace and flat tiles on the attic - create a soberly elegant whole, at the crossroads of regional tradition and the architectural influences of the late Ancien Régime. Inside, there's a surprise in store: behind the arcades, in one of the rooms on the ground floor, there are two small old ovens. These discreet witnesses to the daily life of the parish clergy invite us to imagine the daily life of generations of priests, between services, welcoming the faithful and managing the property of the parish. The Perigordian setting, a blend of gentle hedged farmland and the clay-limestone soils characteristic of the Périgord Blanc region, envelops the monument in a serene atmosphere, far removed from the mass tourism. Photographers and lovers of vernacular architecture will find plenty to contemplate and document in this little-known part of France's built heritage.
The former presbytery at Saint-Front-de-Pradoux is a typical example of 18th-century provincial classical domestic architecture, adapted to the constraints and materials of the Périgord Blanc region. Its rectangular floor plan, developed over two main levels, combines generous living spaces with integrated service functions. The east facade is the centrepiece of the building: five wide semi-circular arches, probably made of local limestone ashlar, punctuate the ground floor along the entire length of the building. Above, a covered gallery with an exposed beam ceiling acts as an ambulatory, leading to the five large rooms on the first floor via the same number of doors. The wooden pillars, laid out with a slight irregularity that betrays the hand of the local craftsman rather than the eye of the Parisian surveyor, support wooden arches that reinforce the whole. The building's rounded corners, rare in regional rural architecture, lend an unexpected softness and sophistication to the whole. A strong moulded cornice marks the transition between the walls and the roof, underlining the aspiration to grand style. The west side is more restrained and is built on one level, without the eastern loggia. The Mansard-style roof - characteristic of the Parisian influence that spread to the French provinces throughout the 18th century - combines a terraced roof covered with canal tiles and a flat-tiled eaves, all resting on a period timber frame. Inside, two small ovens remain in one of the ground floor rooms, a precious reminder of the domestic and economic life of the Périgord parish clergy.
