Ancien pont suspendu de Mirabeau (également sur commune de Mirabeau (Vaucluse) ), located in Jouques (Bouches-du-Rhône), is a medieval landmark built in the Middle Ages. The monument is currently closed to visitors.
Suspended over the wild Durance, the old Mirabeau bridge is a masterpiece of 19th-century Romantic engineering, linking Jouques and Mirabeau between limestone gorges and Provencal skies.
On the border between the Bouches-du-Rhône and Vaucluse departments, where the Durance cuts its most spectacular gorges before joining the plain, the old Mirabeau suspension bridge stands as an elegant testament to the technical daring of the July monarchy. Crossing the river at the very point where two départements face each other, this bridge links the commune of Jouques to that of Mirabeau, its graceful profile set between limestone cliffs gilded by the Provencal sun. What sets this bridge apart from so many others of its time is first and foremost its vertiginous setting in a landscape of gorges, where the Durance, before being tamed by the great dams of the 20th century, imposed its seasonal violence. Building a suspension bridge in such a context was a real challenge: the violent floods, the winds of the Durance corridor and the height of the banks demanded rare technical mastery. Now listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments since 1988, the bridge is as much an object of contemplation as it is of history. Its light metal structure, stone pylons and load-bearing cables form a recognisable silhouette that photographers and lovers of industrial heritage come to see at any time of day. At dawn, when the morning mist rises from the Durance gorges, the view of the structure suspended in the light is almost unreal. The natural surroundings add an extra dimension to the visit: fragrant garrigue, sheer cliffs, the perched villages of Mirabeau on the Vaucluse side and Jouques on the Bouches-du-Rhône side. Walkers who take the old path along the Durance will discover the bridge from every angle, and will understand why this structure, no longer used by modern traffic, has retained its emotional heritage.
The former Mirabeau suspension bridge belongs to the family of suspension bridges with load-bearing cables typical of the second quarter of the 19th century in France. Its design is based on two pylons made of cut limestone, a regional material par excellence, which rise above the banks of the Durance to carry the steel or wrought iron cables from which the deck is suspended. This combination of traditional masonry and industrial metal is one of the most recognisable aesthetic signatures of Romantic engineering architecture. The pylons, treated with neoclassical sobriety, feature moulded capitals and relieving arches designed to accommodate the supporting cables in their guide grooves. The deck, built at rocky bank level, has a main span crossing the Durance at its narrowest point between the gorges. The apparent lightness of the structure - the feeling that the bridge 'floats' between two cliffs - is precisely what won the admiration of contemporaries used to the massive stone bridges of the Ancien Régime. The limestone used for the pylons and abutments blends naturally into the landscape of the gorge, almost blending in with the existing rock. Exposed to the seasonal flooding of the Durance, the violent winds of the Provencal corridor and the significant variations in temperature, the structure bears witness to the robustness of the construction choices made by its builders, who had perfectly integrated the constraints of the site into their project.
