History
On the quays of Cherbourg, a city that has always looked to the Atlantic and its distant horizons, the former Hôtel Atlantique is one of the most unique and moving architectural testimonies in France. Far from being a medieval castle or a Gothic cathedral, this discreet complex embodies a completely different kind of history: that of the millions of men and women who, at the beginning of the 20th century, left Europe to try their luck in the United States, and whose destiny stopped for a few days here, between two worlds. What makes this place truly unique is its original architectural programme: a complex designed from scratch to receive, sort, check the health of and house the emigrants before they embarked. The rigorous separation between the "infected" and "disinfected" quarters - the terms used at the time - is in itself a reflection of the medical and social reality of a century haunted by major epidemics. Each building, each corridor, each courtyard had its precise function in the process that conditioned access to America. Visitors to this complex, organised around a vast rectangular courtyard, enter a space that is both functional and charged with humanity. The central restaurant, set in the heart of the courtyard, evokes the communal meals eaten by thousands of travellers of different origins and languages. The walls, once adorned with stencilled decorations, some of which are still visible, gave this transit area an unexpected touch of hospitality. Photographers, social history buffs and curious travellers will find a rare atmosphere here, far removed from conventional tourist routes. The port setting of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, where some of the world's greatest ocean liners docked - including the Titanic on her only disastrous stopover in 1912 - further amplifies the epic, melancholy dimension of the place. The Hôtel Atlantique is based on a resolutely functional architectural logic, characteristic of the health and social programmes of the first quarter of the 20th century. Designed by the architect Levavasseur, the complex is organised around a vast central rectangular courtyard, a classic ordering principle borrowed from hospital and asylums architecture. This layout made it easy to monitor the flow of people and ensure strict separation between the different areas according to their hygienic function. At the centre of this courtyard stands the restaurant building, designed as a collective facility accessible from the various wings of the establishment. The architectural style is in keeping with the eclectic regionalist trend in vogue in the first decades of the 20th century, with attention paid to the legibility of the volumes and the solidity of the materials. The elevations, of modest height, emphasised functionality over pomp, although the interiors were decorated with stencilled motifs on all the walls - a remarkable aesthetic concern for what was above all a place of transit and sanitary control. These decorative motifs, probably of geometric or floral inspiration in the taste of the nascent Decorative Arts, gave the whole place an atmosphere of measured hospitality. The bipartite division of the complex - the infected quarter on one side, the disinfected quarter on the other - is reflected in the very composition of the buildings, with corridors designed to avoid any contact between the two populations. This rigorous organisation makes the Hôtel Atlantique a key architectural document for understanding health and migration policies at the turn of the century.
