Nestled within the urban fabric of the Notre-Dame housing estate in Waziers, the former school complex of the Compagnie des mines d'Aniche is much more than just an educational building: it is an exceptional architectural and social testament to the first half of the 20th century, a time when the major mining companies of the North built entire towns to house their workers. This monument, listed as a Historic Monument since 2009, embodies the paternalistic and community-oriented philosophy that drove the mining companies: to offer their workers and their families a structured living environment, equipped with all the necessary communal facilities. What immediately sets this school complex apart from contemporary developments is its radically original layout. Whereas public schools of the Third Republic adopted a standardised layout, dictated by circulars from the Ministry of Public Instruction, the Compagnie des mines d’Aniche—the private developer—granted itself a rare freedom of design. The classrooms, offices and service areas are grouped into very large corner pavilions, creating a monumental and distinctive silhouette within the landscape of the workers’ housing estate.
