Built at the dawn of civilisation, the Gueldro alignments in Plouhinec line up their granite menhirs in silence for thousands of years, fascinating witnesses to the megalithic Morbihan, listed as a Historic Monument.
In the heart of the Quiberon peninsula, in the wilds of Plouhinec, the Gueldro alignments are one of those stone landscapes that Brittany has engraved in the collective unconscious. Emerging from the Morbihan's wooded moors like the fingers of a hand stretched out towards an ever-changing sky, these local granite menhirs tell the story, in their stubborn silence, of a civilisation that had already mastered astronomy, the land and the sacred several thousand years before our era. What sets Gueldro apart from the region's most famous megalithic sites is its intimate character. Far from the tourist crowds that line Carnac, just a few kilometres to the north, the site retains an authentic, almost solitary atmosphere. The rows of boulders, arranged along a carefully oriented axis, invite visitors to take a slow stroll, attentive to the details: the orange lichens that cover the sides of the stones, the long evening shadows that underline the geometric regularity of the whole, the subtle relationship between the monoliths and the surrounding relief. The site is part of the Morbihan megalithic constellation, one of the densest in the world, which concentrates hundreds of alignments, dolmens and tumuli around the Gulf of Morbihan and the Bay of Quiberon. Le Gueldro is part of this exceptional heritage, offering a complementary interpretation to the large areas of Carnac and Erdeven. For archaeologists and walkers alike, it represents an irreplaceable piece of the Armorican Neolithic puzzle. The Breton light does its job here. At the end of the day, the menhirs cast their elongated shadows on the short grass, creating a graphic effect that photographers and watercolourists are looking for. In the morning, when the mist rises from the lowlands, the site takes on an almost dreamlike quality, conducive to contemplation and meditation. Curious families, prehistory enthusiasts and wild coast walkers will all find their own emotions here.
The Gueldro alignments belong to the large family of megalithic monuments of the orthostathic type - standing stones, or menhirs, arranged in parallel rows on an axis generally oriented according to astronomical landmarks. The blocks used are made of Armorican granite, the dominant rock of the Quiberon peninsula and the Carnac region, characterised by its coarse grading, its grey-beige colour with pinkish highlights and its exceptional resistance to erosion, which has enabled these monuments to survive for thousands of years virtually intact. They are built using the megalithic principle: rough or roughly squared blocks, weighing from a few hundred kilograms to several tonnes depending on their size, are set vertically into the ground by wedging their base into a pit filled with earth and stone wedges. The height of the menhirs varies from site to site: some are no more than a metre high, while others are two or three metres. This variation may be intentional, creating a crescendo or decrescendo effect along the rows, or it may reflect constraints on the supply of materials. The layout of parallel rows, characteristic of the great Morbihan alignments, gives the whole an ordered and monumental character, transforming the landscape into an open-air architecture of rare evocative power. Unlike covered structures such as dolmens or covered walkways, the alignments do not form an enclosed interior space. Their architecture is fundamentally landscape and processional: they define corridors, ritual axes of circulation and directed perspectives. The relationship between the standing stones, the gently undulating terrain of Plouhinec and the nearby seascape gives the Gueldro a spatial dimension that can only be fully appreciated by walking around.
