Rising out of the Floranges forest, these Neolithic menhirs, standing in a row, are one of the wildest and most intact examples of megalithic architecture in inland Morbihan.
History
In the heart of the Floranges national forest, in the commune of Camors in Morbihan, a row of menhirs stands silently among the oaks and ferns. This line of standing stones, listed as a Historic Monument since 1934, is part of the exceptional megalithic constellation that has made Brittany one of the cradles of prehistoric funerary and ritual architecture in Europe. Just a few kilometres from the major sites at Carnac, it shares the same spirit without the same tourist reputation, offering a much more intimate and contemplative experience. What sets the Floranges alignment apart is precisely its forest setting. Whereas the menhirs at Carnac are openly displayed in a moorland landscape, those at Camors blend into a dense undergrowth, filtering light according to the season and the time of day. This vegetation, far from obscuring the site, lends it an atmosphere charged with mystery: in the early hours of the morning, when the mist clings to the shafts of the trees, the stones seem to emerge from another time. The experience of visiting the site is above all a sensory and meditative one. Hikers who follow the forest paths around Floranges discover the menhirs gradually, almost by surprise. Some of the blocks, straightened or tilted by the passage of time, are several metres high, carved out of the local granite with its bluish reflections, covered in green velvet in places by moss. You take the time to walk around each boulder, to feel its roughness, to imagine the arms and backs that pulled them up over five millennia ago. The natural setting of the national forest adds an ecological and poetic dimension to the visit. Architecture
The Floranges alignment belongs to the large typological family of menhir alignments, a megalithic form characteristic of the Armorican Neolithic. The blocks, cut from the two-mica granite common in the Morbihan subsoil, have irregular profiles that have been deliberately preserved since extraction: only the base has been worked to allow the stone to be buried and stabilised in the ground. The heights vary from a few dozen centimetres for the most slumped blocks to around two or three metres for the monoliths that are still perfectly upright, a variability typical of secondary alignments in inland Morbihan. The layout of the stones follows a general axis oriented approximately north-west/south-east, an orientation frequently observed in Breton alignments and often associated with sunset on the solstices. The spacing between the blocks, which is relatively regular despite the disruption caused by roots and vegetation, suggests that the site was carefully planned from the outset. The exact number of menhirs still standing bears witness to the losses suffered over the centuries, with some stones having toppled over and been partially buried under forest litter. The integration of the site into the forest environment has led to remarkable biological colonisation phenomena on the granite surfaces: grey-green foliaceous lichens, hypnaceous mosses and even young fern shoots settle in the crevices, transforming each menhir into a living micro-ecosystem. While this overgrowth complicates epigraphic studies and surface surveys, it gives the stones an authentic patina and raw beauty that reinforce the feeling of great age inherent in these monuments.
